Knowing Our Real Value

When the light for the oil change comes up in our car, we immediately plan a visit to the mechanic to preserve the engine’s life. Oddly enough, many of us don’t apply the same urgency and care when it comes to our own health. While an occasional indulgence in unhealthy food is fine, making it a habit can take a severe toll on our well-being. Imagine this scenario: you’re getting your car’s oil changed and decide to grab a greasy meal with fries and a sugary soda. What does this say about the value we place on our own bodies? We rush to maintain our car’s engine but neglect our health, which is far more critical.
Let’s compare the value between ourselves and our cars to understand the logic. Assume the car’s engine is worth about 10 to 20% of the car’s total value. Now, let’s consider our own worth. Imagine we offer a billion-dollar prize for the first person who can create a fruit fly from scratch. Undoubtedly, no one would come close to achieving this. Despite a fruit fly’s simplicity compared to humans, creating even that tiny life form is beyond our current capabilities. Humans, on the other hand, are the only species capable of reasoning and are the most intelligent beings on this planet. By this logic, our value should be in the trillions compared to a fruit fly. However, we panic over an oil change and fail to look after ourselves, suggesting that we value ourselves less than our car’s engine. If we follow this logic, it’s clear we often undervalue our own worth.
What if we didn’t change the oil in our car? The engine might last only half its potential life. Conversely, if we take good care of ourselves, we can enjoy a healthy life well into our 80s or beyond. It’s not a bad deal to prioritize our health, and we can certainly take care of both our bodies and our cars. Both are valuable and deserve our attention and gratitude.
Ultimately, it’s a matter of perspective. When you change your viewpoint, the things you see will change as well. Recognizing our real value helps us make better choices for our health and well-being. So, the next time you rush for that oil change, remember to also check in on your own “engine” and give it the care it deserves.
